When my anxious thoughts multiply within me, Your comforts delight me.
Psalm 94:19 AMP
Can I first say that I love when I find scriptures that just gives me a whole new revelation, and I am able to identify with the writer! That is the beauty behind the word of the Lord it is full of new revelations. It isn't a book that is only applicable to those in the time it was written. It is for us even today. I believe that God was so intentional when He wrote the Bible. He knew the great benefits it would be for us to see that even people in the bible went or struggled with similar situations or emotions like we do today and they can be relatable. The author of this Psalm, was just like us. They experienced times where their thoughts just consumed them. It doesn't go into detail what those anxious thoughts were, but honestly I'm grateful that the Lord didn't go into specifics. I think it allows us to insert our struggle or situation.
When my anxious thoughts multiply within me
Anxious: Experiencing worry, unease, or nervousness, typically about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome.
I don't know about you, but I can so relate to the psalmist when they are talking about anxious thoughts multiplying within them. Because as someone who struggles with anxiety and overthinking, when one anxious thoughts enters my mind, it is usually followed by many others. Can you relate? It is something like a domino effect. But why is it so easy to develop anxiousness instead of trust and to believe for the best? I know for me when I am anxious about something it deters me from what is in front of me. My mind starts to think of the worst things possible and fear starts to set in. I start creating things in my mind that most likely won't even happen. From life choices , the future, career, family, health it seems like nothing is off limits. Even the smallest things that shouldn't concern us can make its way in consuming our mind if we aren't careful. We can dig ourselves into a pit without even realizing it. Honestly, we are our own worst enemies when it comes to worrying. Why? Because it doesn't benefit our lives, it just hinders us from seeing all the great things that God is wanting to do. Ultimately, when we allow those thoughts to consume our lives, our focus is on the unknown rather than the One who is all knowing. He is right there promising rest as we lean into who He is.
Your comforts delight me.
Comfort can be defined as the easing or alleviation of a person's feelings of grief or distress.
When you are anxious, you are distressed right? Well be encouraged, because God is the god of all comfort (2 Corinthians 1:3-5), so we can trust in His willingness to comfort us in those moments. As I have matured in the Lord, I have come to recognize those patterns of anxiety and how to combat them. I know that the only way is to first surrender by giving it to the Lord. In doing this I know I must humble myself and realize I can not handle this on my own. And to do that I know I first must go into His presence. There is so much sweetness and joy there. For so long I neglected the power of His presence and I never want to be in the place again where I don't run to it. In His presence, I am able to open up a dialogue about why I am having those anxious thoughts and really get to the root of it. We discuss what may have triggered those thoughts and what does His word of truth say about those things. I am able to be filled as I pour out my deepest concerns to Him. In the presence of the Lord, I am reminded of who and who's I am and I always walk out stronger than I was when I entered. Remember, even though God is an all knowing god, He desires for us to come to Him with all things. He knows how that will build our intimacy with Him.
When we look to the Lord and the comforts that are in Him, we lose focus on the things that don't matter. Our comfort is found in Him as we seek the hope that He promises to give. Those anxious thoughts no longer crowd our mind; because we are looking to the one that is bigger than any problem or issue we may face.
Let today's verse be an encouragement to you when those anxious thoughts try to take over. You have the power to stop anxiety in its tracks! He has given you the tools right in His word to remind you of His promises to you.Think upon the goodness of our God, and what lies in the comfort of His arms. He hasn't failed in keeping you this far, so He is faithful to continue. I know this sometimes can be challenging, but when you remember those time in the past where God has came through for you even if it seemed small, you will see that it is possible. He cares about the things that you care about. So we can trust Him with the things that concern us. Just talk to Him about it.
Join me in slaying anxiety by exchanging anxious thoughts for the comforts of the Lord! I hope this blessed you in some way. :)
